Natural Horn and Fortepiano
During the Spring of 2022 Mike was on sabbatical and wanted to record a work for natural horn and fortepiano. We wanted to uplift a work by a historically excluded composer. Teresa Carreño was a Venezuelan composer and pianist who was an active during the 19th century. We performed and recorded Carreño’s Elegie, originally for piano solo, with collaborator Kimberly Carballo..
The recording took place on March 19 at Indiana University. Samuel Kennedy (recent Alumni of UNM) created the arrangement of a solo piano work for natural horn and fortepiano. The original work was composed in 1836, the horn Mike played on was a replica of a circa 1820 Raox Horn, and the fortepiano was a replica of an early 19th century Beethoven instrument. We wanted the look of the video to match the aesthetic of Carreño’s workpiece, and recording engineer Matthew Champagne was able to create an incredible artistically appropriate lighting and sound environment.
